The Hunt
I have done my best to answer all of these questions as accurately as possible. But, especially on the hunting part, please remember, it is best to inquire first to see what the birds are doing.
Q : What time of year is the best for ducks?
A: Duck hunting can be done all year round. But, high volume duck hunting is only good during prime season. Which is November thru March.
Q : What time of year is the best for doves?
A : Dove hunting is good all year round. You can expect a little higher volume from September thur May.
Q : Is there a limit on the number of ducks or doves I can harvest? How many can I expect to harvest.
A : This is a tricky question, and of course it is called hunting. So time of year, weather conditions, rainfall, harvest times, all need to be taken into consideration. So, I will answer on a average. During prime times, an average shot can expect to harvest 25 to 35 ducks on a morning shoot. An average shot can harvest between 150 to 250 doves on an evening shoot. If you are better than average shot, those numbers will go up. If you are a below average shot, they will go down. Most importantly, they will be lots of doves to shoot at.
Q : Can I bring my own gun?
A : Yes, you can bring your own guns. We do not recommend it for a couple of reasons. First the hassle you will have to go through at the airports. Second, if you make one small mistake, one number wrong, letter wrong on the application, it can cause big delay. Last, you will be cycling a lot of rounds through your gun. Wear and tear should be considered. With all that being said, you can bring your own gun, just HAVE to have your paperwork in at least 45 days prior to your arrival, and th$ 150.00 per gun. We will send you all the information and papers you will need and help you through the process. You will have to have customs form 4457, passport picture page, and hunter safety certificate, or hunting club membership.
Q : What type of guns do we offer?
A : We keep new guns on hand. Cycling out every two years, to make sure we have quality guns at all times. Mostly what we have are Bretta Outlanders, 12 gauge, semi-auto. We do have a small supply of 20 gauge semi auto, and some over and under. Will need to check with me to see what is available. We do not have 28 gauges, and the shells are almost impossible to get. If it is a must, you can check with me, I will do my best to see what I can get.
Q : Can I bring my hunting dog?
A: No, it is way too much trouble and paperwork and expense, and we do not deal with that. Plus the quarantine, its just a real headache. But again, if it is a must, please let me know, and will see what I can do.
Q : What type of ducks and dove will I be harvesting?
A : Most of the ducks will be blue wing teal, with some green wing teal, fulvous tree ducks, and widgeons. Dove is mostly white wing doves, with some pigeons on occasion.
Q : Will I be hunting in blinds?
A : Most of the duck hunting is done from dry blinds, with decoys. But they are, sometimes we need to get a little wet, and do some stand shooting in high reeds. It all will be determined by what the conditions are and flight patterns of the birds on your hunting date. We stay versatile and flexible. Sometimes we are even unorthodox on the methods, but we put you on the birds. All methods will be discussed with you beforehand, and make sure we get your input. Dove hunting is done in large grain fields, with fence rows and will be comparable to hunting in Mexico or the US.
Q : Do I need to bring waders?
A : Yes, we would suggest that you bring knee waders at the least. Chest waders are good also, but mostly knee boots will do fine.
Q : What shot size will I be shooting?
A : We always try to match the shot size with the bird we are hunting. With ducks being No.2 to 4, 6 and doves 6, 7 1/2 to 8. Shells are quite a bit more difficult to get in Nicaragua than in the US. The military controls all of the shells, so we have to take what we can get sometimes. But, we do our best to have the right shot sizes.
Q : How far are the hunting fields from our hotel?
A : 30 to 40 minutes at most.
Q : What type of roads will be traveling on?
A : 90% paved roads, 10% gravel or dirt roads going to the fields.
Q : Can we bring home the doves or ducks?
A : No, but we can have them taxidermy and sent to you.
Q : Can I shoot all day long?
A : Yes, but it will according to the flight of the birds. Some times they only fly during certain parts of the day. But, you are welcome to hunt all day, but we can not guarantee the birds will fly all day.
Q : What tips should I give the bird boys, hunting guides, drivers?
A : If you decide to pay your own tips, this would be completely up to you. Tips are not required, and are only a show of appreciation for the hard work the staff put in. I have seen clients tip from $ 5.00 to 100.00 per day.
Q : What do we do with our harvested birds?
A : Most of the harvested birds will be given to needy families that line up at the gate leaving the fields each day. We can also have some of them prepared for your lunch, or even dinner if you choose. You cannot bring the meat back home.
